World Religions for World Peace

The principles discussed so far are in accordance with the ethical teachings of all world religions. I maintain that every major religion of the world - Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism - has similar ideals of love, the same goal of benefiting humanity through spiritual practice, and the same effect of making their followers into better human beings. All religions teach moral precepts for perfecting the functions of mind, body, and speech. All teach us not to lie or steal or take others' lives, and so on. The common goal of all moral precepts laid down by the great teachers of humanity is unselfishness. The great teachers wanted to lead their followers away from the paths of negative deeds caused by ignorance and to introduce them to paths of goodness.

All religions agree upon the necessity to control the undisciplined mind that harbours selfishness and other roots of trouble, and each teaches a path leading to a spiritual state that is peaceful, disciplined, ethical, and wise. It is in this sense that I believe all religions have essentially the same message. Differences of dogma may be ascribed to differences of time and circumstance as well as cultural influences; indeed, there is no end to scholastic argument when we consider the purely metaphysical side of religion. However, it is much more beneficial to try to implement in daily life the shared precepts for goodness taught by all religions rather than to argue about minor differences in approach.

There are many different religions to bring comfort and happiness to humanity in much the same way as there are particular treatments for different diseases. For, all religions endeavour in their own way to help living beings avoid misery and gain happiness. And, although we can find causes for preferring certain interpretations of religious truths, there is much greater cause for unity, stemming from the human heart. Each religion works in its own way to lessen human suffering and contribute to world civilization. Conversion is not the point. For instance, I do not think of converting others to Buddhism or merely furthering the Buddhist cause. Rather, I try to think of how I as a Buddhist humanitarian can contribute to human happiness.

While pointing out the fundamental similarities between world religions, I do not advocate one particular religion at the expense of all others, nor do I seek a new 'world religion'. All the different religions of the world are needed to enrich human experience and world civilization. Our human minds, being of different calibre and disposition, need different approaches to peace and happiness. It is just like food. Certain people find Christianity more appealing, others prefer Buddhism because there is no creator in it and everything depends upon your own actions. We can make similar arguments for other religions as well. Thus, the point is clear: humanity needs all the world's religions to suit the ways of life, diverse spiritual needs, and inherited national traditions of individual human beings.

Dalai Lama Teachings

His Holiness the Dalai Lama gives teachings throughout the year at various times and in different places. His Holiness also gives public talks. In India, teachings and public talks are usually free and open to the public. However, to attend teachings and public talks outside of India one usually is required to purchase a ticket. The proceeds from the ticket sales are used to cover the costs of the venue and other expenses related to His Holiness's visit.

On the 16th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar (which usually falls sometime in February or March) His Holiness gives his annual spring teachings (also called Monlam teachings) at the Main Temple in Dharamsala. These teachings usually last for a period of 15 days and are officially translated into English on FM channel. Several thousand people, both Tibetan and non-Tibetan, attend these popular teachings. His Holiness also gives other shorter teachings throughout the year at different times. During the last few years, His Holiness has also been giving teachings in India at the request of various Buddhist devotees from Taiwan and Korea. These teachings are usually translated into Chinese or Korean over the public address system and into English on FM channel. During the winter months in India, His Holiness often visits Bodh Gaya or some of the Tibetan settlements located in south India where he also regularly gives teachings.

His Holiness also gives a number of empowerments and initiations throughout the year, usually coinciding with his teachings. The Kalachakra Initiation is a complex and extensive initiation, which His Holiness has given 29 times up to 2005. However, His Holiness has always stressed the importance of practitioners attending the teachings rather than the initiations or empowerments in order to allow you to better understand the philosophy of Buddhism.

Origins of the Swan Lake story

Many critics have disputed the original source of the Swan Lake story. The Russian ballet patriarch Fyodor Lopukhov has called Swan Lake a "national ballet" because of its swans, who originate from Russian lyrically romantic sources, while many of the movements of the corps de ballet originated from Slavonic ring-dances. According to Lopukhov, "both the plot of Swan Lake, the image of the Swan and the very idea of a faithful love are essentially Russian".

The libretto is based on a story by the German author Johann Karl August Musäus, "Der geraubte Schleier" (The Stolen Veil), though this story provides only the general outline of the plot of Swan Lake. The Russian folktale "The White Duck" also bears some resemblance to the story of the ballet, and may have been another possible source. The contemporaries of Tchaikovsky recalled the composer taking great interest in the life story of Bavarian King Ludwig II, whose tragic life had supposedly been marked by the sign of Swan and who—either consciously or not—was chosen as the prototype of the dreamer Prince Siegfried.

Lotus Pose in Yoga

The Lotus Pose or Padmasana in Sanskrit requires crossing the legs while maintaining a straight back, making it ideal for Meditation and concentration. This Yoga Pose has a lot of benefits such as giving a relaxing effect, increasing awareness and attentiveness, stimulating body parts and processes, and keeping or developing a good posture.

STEP 1: With your palms down, sit on the floor with your legs fully stretched.

STEP 2: Hold your right foot with your hands and put it over your left thigh until it reaches the groin. Your foot's outer edge should reach your hip's crease.

STEP 3: Hold your right knee using your right hand while the other hand clasps your right foot.

STEP 4: While your right foot is firmly placed over your left thigh, hold your left foot with both hands. Place your left foot over your right thigh. Your foot's outer edge should also reach your hip's crease.

STEP 5: You have now achieved a full Lotus Asana. You can have your palms positioned upward, which is energizing or put them down which helps in grounding yourself.

Beginners are recommended to begin doing Half Lotus first before proceeding with the full Lotus Asana. Once you are already a regular practitioner of this Asana, you can try walking using the palms of your hand while both feet are perfectly crossed.

The Lotus Pose is one of the most popular Yoga Asanas around. Aside from the physiological benefits if offers, the Lotus Pose also helps in developing and maintaining a good posture.

Dance With Me (1998)

After burying his mother, Rafael Infante (Chayanne) comes from Santiago, Cuba to Houston, Texas to work for a man named John Burnett (Kris Kristofferson) as a handyman in Burnett's dance studio. It soon becomes clear to the audience that Burnett is the father Rafael had never known. While there he finds himself falling for a dancer and instructor Ruby Sinclair (Williams), who incidentally brought him to the studio. It turns out that the dancers in the studio are preparing for a dance competition in Las Vegas and that Ruby would be taking part as well. Rafael gets close to Ruby and their attraction to each other grows, but she is not willing to commit herself to a relationship as she seems more interested in her dancing.

Meanwhile, Rafael's arrival and persona wins him the friendship of an older dancer Bea Johnson (Joan Plowright) as well as the studio receptionist Lovejoy (Beth Grant), but it also causes some discomfort to Burnett, who suddenly begins to withdraw into himself and takes less interest in the preparations for the competition, much to the chagrin of his own partner Patricia Black (Jane Krakowski). While visiting Burnett at his home, Rafael notices and offers to repair his old and broken-down truck. He and Ruby go downtown to get the parts needed to repair the truck and are invited to an engagement party by a Cuban man whose daughter was getting engaged. While there, both of them discover more about each other as he tells her that his mother had died but that he never knew his father.

Later, Rafael invites Ruby to a dance party at a club in the city and they agree to go on the following Saturday night. Before leaving, Rafael helps Patricia get a dance lift move she had been practicing, explaining that his mother made him take a little ballet. The following Saturday, he and Ruby go to the party in which they perform, along with other dancers, the Latin Salsa dancing to a song by Albita Rodriguez. After the party he takes Ruby home where he discovers that she has a 7-year-old son, Peter, who is "looked after" by Bea in Ruby's absence and who happens to be fathered by Ruby's former dance partner, Julian Marshall (Rick Valenzuela). While there he comes up to Ruby and they share a passionate kiss, but she eventually breaks it up.

American painter Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967) famously painted melancholy images of alienation in daily life. His stark urban and rural scenes are eerily realistic, depicting desolate structures and painfully isolated people. A skilled watercolorist and printmaker, Hopper was primarily known for his oil paintings. Although he dreamed of being a Naval architect, once he discovered painting, he achieved quick fame and soon became America’s leading Realist. His grim scenes, mainly of New York and New England, were emphasized with severe lines, shapes, colors and angles and his later works revealed similarities to geometric abstraction.

Footloose is a 2011 American dance film directed by Craig Brewer. It is a remake of the 1984 film of the same name and stars Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Andie MacDowell, and Dennis Quaid. The film follows a young man who moves from Boston to a small southern town and protests the town's ban against dancing.

Filming took place from September to November 2010 in Georgia. It was released in Australia and New Zealand on October 6, 2011, and in North America on October 14, 2011. It grossed $15.5 million in its opening weekend and $62 million worldwide. It was met with generally positive reaction from critics.

After a long night of partying, Bobby Moore and four of his friends drive over a bridge and, not paying attention, crash into a truck, killing them instantly. His father, Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid), the reverend of the church of the small Southern United States town of Bomont, Georgia, persuades the city council to pass several paternalistic laws, including a ban on all unsupervised dancing within the city limits as well as a by-law curfew.

Three years later, Ren McCormack (Kenny Wormald), a teenager raised in Boston, moves to Bomont to live with his uncle, aunt, and cousins after his mother's painful death from leukemia. Soon after arriving, Ren makes friends with Willard Hewitt (Miles Teller), a fellow senior at Bomont High School, and from him learns about the ban on dancing. He soon begins to be attracted to Moore's rebellious daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough), who is dating dirt-track driver Chuck Cranston (Patrick Flueger), whose father owns the local race-track. After an insult from Chuck, Ren ends up in a game involving buses, and despite his inability to drive a bus, he wins. Reverend Moore mistrusts Ren, forbidding Ariel to see him ever again. Ren and his classmates want to do away with the law and have a senior prom.

After a while, Ariel begins to fall for Ren and breaks up with Chuck, telling him she's sick of him treating her like dirt. In result, he insults her and she starts to demolish his truck he then hits her bruising her face. After hearing of Ariel's beaten condition, Moore meets up with Ariel and his wife, Vi (Andie MacDowell), at the church and instantly thinks Ren was the one who had beaten his daughter. When he declares he wants Ren arrested, Ariel tells him that he can't blame everything on Ren just like he did with Bobby, who died in the car crash. She goes on to say how Bobby spent his entire life trying to make him proud but he was never good enough for him; and now no one remembers the good things about Bobby, only the bad. After she bitterly reveals to having lost her virginity, Moore slaps her across the face, prompting Ariel to flee from the church, her mother going after her who tells Moore he's "done enough". Vi is supportive of the movement to allow dancing. She explains to Moore he cannot be everyone's father, and that he is hardly being a good father to Ariel. She also says that dancing and music are not the problem.

Ren goes before the city council and reads several Bible verses, given to him by Ariel, that describe how in ancient times people would dance to rejoice, exercise, celebrate, and/or worship, hoping to lift the dancing ban. Meanwhile, Ren also teaches Willard how to dance. The city council votes against him. Undaunted, Ren convinces the owner of the cotton mill where he works to let them have a prom there; the mill is just outside the Bomont city limits. Ren goes to see Moore, knowing that Moore still has enough influence to pressure the parents not to let their teenagers come. Ren tells Moore that even though they denied the motion to dismiss the law, they cannot stop the teenagers from having the first senior prom, which has always been denied. He then asks him respectfully if he can take Ariel. Moore, after some thought, allows Ariel to go and makes amends with his wife and daughter, better understanding things.

On Sunday, Shaw asks his congregation to pray for the high school students putting on the prom. Not long after Ren and Ariel arrive at the prom, Chuck and several of his friends ride up, intent on beating up Ren and Willard for an earlier fight in the movie. However, Ren and Willard fend them off along with Rusty and Ariel's help. Ren then flings some confetti into a shredding machine and yells, "Let's dance!" The movie ends with everyone dancing in the barn to the song from the opening credits, "Footloose".
